A GUIDING WORD
Guiding Words have been developed to help you investigate Grow Ministries 10 guiding principles from a biblical perspective. Using the Faith 5 concept we encourage you to go deeper with your family, ministry teams and others that are involved in encouraging the faith journey of your congregation and families.
Guiding Principle 2 – Faith at Home
Faith is integrated into family identity and practice.
Share one thing that you can remember growing up that helped you identify that your faith and that of your families was more than a once a week practice on Sunday? This might include: family devotions, Christmas & Easter rituals and traditions, you and/or your family serving your local community, Christian milestone celebrations.
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
In Israel you can buy little metal containers to attach to your doors at home. You put tiny little parchments inside with bible verses and hopefully notice them whenever you walk through a doorway in your house. We could also literally tie things to our arms and foreheads, but is this God’s intent as Moses addresses the Lord’s children?
God always intended that our formation in faith would sit at the heart of family life. Reading a devotion together is wonderful, but God’s vision sees parents sharing their faith stories with their children. His vision for family life sees parents (and children) sharing not only their joys, but also the cries of their hearts and the struggles they’re facing and bringing them all to the person of Jesus.
Deuteronomy is showing us that we are part of God’s big story. Families have the joy of sharing that the gospel of Jesus Christ meets us in the everyday events of life in ways that bring his truth, love and hope to bear on our hearts as only He can. We are part of His-story.
- What is this text asking us to do as parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles?
- When and where?
Pray for each other, your congregation and the world.
Bless each other with these words: (Name), you are loved by God and free to share His love with all people. Amen.
