Holy communion is a special gift that Jesus gave to his church. It is a vital part of our congregational life. It gives us great comfort and strength. It unites us as one big church family. It celebrates all that Jesus has done for us.
In the past, young people in the Lutheran church have usually been admitted to the sacrament of the altar in the Rite of Confirmation, in early adolescence. However, many congregations are now admitting younger children to the sacrament, before confirmation. A child who takes part in First Communion is be encouraged to take part in the Rite of Confirmation some time later. Before participating in holy communion, children have been required to complete a course of instruction, often led by the pastor.
Grow Ministries is excited to share with you a new resource that encourages congregations and families to work together in preparing children to receive the special gift of holy communion.
Children rely on parents to teach them the most important things in life, such as talking and walking. Parents also play a major role in the faith life of their children, and in fact are the most influential people in a young person’s faith journey. The lessons in this resource invite parents to share the journey as their child learns more about holy communion and prepares to receive this special meal for the first time.
This resource has been designed for parents and their children to do in their homes, guided by a congregational leader. It can also be completed within a group situation if there are other families who have children wishing to prepare for first communion. Adult mentors from within the congregation could be encouraged to walk alongside the children as they embark on this part of their faith journey.
We pray this resource is a wonderful opportunity to support the parents in your congregation to help their children grow in their faith. Please feel free to use this resource however it fits best into your congregational context.
